![]() ![]() ![]() As such, the unfortunate familiars are supposed to be treated as beleaguered servants at best, and abused slaves at worst, in order to keep their egos and appetites in check, lest they plot their master’s downfall. Understandably, the majority of Spirit Oni familiars have a relationship with their caster that can generously be described as “antagonistic.” The Spirit Oni often come to despise their masters with a ferocity that few creatures are capable of achieving, and no amount of flattery or gifts will soothe this animosity, as no flattery or gift could ever compare to what the Spirit Oni believes it could achieve if it had a proper body. Rather than forming its own body, an errant Oni spirit is sucked into the mask and trapped inside it, forever robbed of its chance to acquire a physical form of its own and denied its freedom. Spirit Oni do not come into being naturally, you see 100% of the Spirit Oni in existence are the artificial creation of an Evil spellcaster of level 7 or higher that has the Improved Familiar feat and money to burn on crafting a wicked-looking mask. ![]() These beasts eventually find sites of great evil and tragedy and use the lingering malice to form themselves a physical body: A hideous, towering, hedonistic Oni. Cast out by their kin and the mystic laws that bind them, most Kami end up fading into harmless nature spirits if they don’t fade away entirely… but the usual result of such a transgression isn’t the Kami in question disappearing from the world, but devolving into a rancorous spirit beast. A highly unusual one today! The Oni are the results of a Kami–a spirit being meant to defend and encourage harmony between mankind and nature–failing in its esoteric duties. ![]()
